An outstanding rendition of the Prokofiev 1st Piano Concerto by Daniil Trifonov and Valery Gergiev

Last Sunday live on medici.tv, the 21 year-old pianist Daniil Trifonov gave an extatic rendition of the First Concerto for piano and orchestra by Prokofiev, live from the Moscow Easter Festival. Accompanied by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra from St-Petersburg under the baton of Valery Gergiev (their music director for over the past twenty years and the founder of the festival), Daniil Trifonov (3rd prize at the Chopin Competition in 2010, 1st prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition and 1st prize at the Rubinstein Competition in 2011) offers an impressive performance of this masterpiece of extreme technical and artistic difficulties.

For the 11th edition of the Moscow Easter Festival, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra have chosen to dedicate four concerts to the work of Sergei Prokofiev. You will hear his complete symphonies, four of his piano concertos, his most popular ballets (Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella, of course), as well as rarer pieces such as the Egyptian suite…

Four these four concerts, the Festival invites four outstanding pianists: Daniil Trifonov (21 year-old pianist, 1st prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011, 3rd prize at the Chopin Competition in 2010), Alexander Toradze (who once recorded the complete Prokofiev concertos with Gergiev), Alexei Volodin (a former student of the Moscow Conservatory) and Sergei Babayan.
